A refinement is presented on the definitions of abortion, recurrent pregnancy loss, spontaneous abortion and early spontaneous abortion. Abnormalities in the growth and development of the embryo are the most frequent causes of pregnancy loss both subclinically and clinically recognizable. The causes of spontaneous abortion and recurrent pregnancy loss are multiple, among the most frequent are genetic alterations, endocrinopathies, infections, acquired thrombophilias and anatomical causes. A review of counseling for couples suffering from these pathologies is carried out.
