Abstract

Most diabetic patients in the course of their disease will have some episode of hypoglycemia, which should be recognized and treated to avoid negative consequences in the patient. The objective of this work is to know the evidence about hypoglycemia in diabetic patients. The epidemiology, classification of hypoglycemia, clinical aspects and counterregulation mechanisms are analyzed. The harmful effects of hypoglycaemia at cardiovascular and brain level, its impact on mortality and quality of life are evaluated. Its particularity in special situations, childhood, pregnancy and old age. The aspects related to the prevention and treatment of hypoglycaemia are reviewed.
