This article is part of the doctoral research entitled Estudio de Pertinencia de los Programas de Formación y Ejercicio Profesional de los Criminólogos en Nuevo León, developed at the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras of the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, with funding from the Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT) in Mexico. This article highlights the importance of scientific research in the areas of criminology and criminalistics and points out four pending areas of development: epistemology and methodology; criminological philosophy; scientific research; and teaching. In Mexico, the organization in charge of guiding scientific and technological activity is CONACYT, of which several areas in which it is linked to criminology and scientific research are presented here. It also shows the process of involvement in the training in science and methodology to be incorporated into the exercise of research and development of knowledge, through quality postgraduate studies. Finally, criminologists in Mexico who are distinguished by the national government as researchers are listed.
