: In 1966, the Dominican friar Jean-Baptiste Lassègue-Molères arrived in Montevideo as a new member of the community of friars from Toulouse, established in Montevideo since 1953 and undergoing a process of renewal. Father Lassègue forged strong friendships and created a welcoming environment for a group of Uruguayan lay people with strong intellectual and spiritual concerns. Alberto Methol Ferré was one of them. The relationship between Jean-Baptiste Lassègue and Alberto Methol Ferré was founded on shared concerns, such as Methol’s spiritual quest, and Lassègues’s interest in deepening his understanding of Latin American identity. It also involved, for the first one, a new perspective on Latin America; for the second, the renewed commitment to Christianity, that is that of a mature spirit. Both agreed on the appreciation of Iberian culture as an element of Latin American identity; the interest in defending the poorest; the rejection of the «Marxistization» of Latin American theology; and the goal of rebuilding the «Patria Grande».
