The study investigates the representation of José Enrique Rodó and his ideas in the monument located in the Parque Rodó in Montevideo. It addresses when and how it was decided to commemorate this Uruguayan intellectual and writer in the public space of Montevideo, analyzes the monument’s link with the urban environment, the message of the time it contains and the ideas about Rodó that it transmits. It reflects on the problem of the function of monuments in public space, of the materialization of commemorations as places of memory and construction of identity.
