Abstract

RODRIGUEZ MANSILLA, Fernando. A discreet homage to Juan Carlos Onetti: “Agnieszka en la costa” by Hugo Fontana. Humanidades (Montevideo. En línea) [online]. 2019, n.5, pp.97-116.  Epub June 01, 2019. ISSN 1510-5024.  https://doi.org/10.25185/5.6.

This article analyzes the short story “Agnieszka en la costa” by Hugo Fontana (included in his book Desaparición de Susana Estévez, 2015) as a sophisticated re-elaboration of several narrative materials (characters, scenes, and topics) from the fictional world of Juan Carlos Onetti. I aim to reveal the painstaking narrative design of Fontana’s work, as well as the implications on meaning of this literary remaking. Fontana shares with Onetti a strong interest in the detective novel and they both incorporate resources from this genre to their works. However, Fontana shows an additional facet in his use of the detective novel devices: a critique about the political situation.

Keywords : Agnieszka in the Coast; Hugo Fontana; Juan Carlos Onetti; literary re-creation.
