Border irrigation is the modality of surface irrigation that fits better to the fodder crops in direct seeding, however, the high slopes and low infiltration rates of most of the soils of the south of Uruguay make it difficult to adapt to the recommendations of the international bibliography. The objective of the study was to determine the border irrigation’s performance indicators in the southern Uruguayan soils, and to identify optimization scenarios to define management strategies. An experiment was installed with border irrigation oriented in the direction of maximum slope, varying the direction between the border groups with the aim of minimizing the transversal slope. The good conformation of the borders favored the field measures of the performance indicators. In order to evaluate situations different from those tested in the field, the use of the WinSRFR model was proposed. For the soil evaluated, a long of slope of 50-60 m the flow 0.2 L/s/m had the best response to the optimization by cutting time. The flow rate 0.5 L/s/m achieved the best efficiencies with lengths around 170 m. The flow rate of 0.33 L/s/m could be the best solution in areas where the slope has variable length, allowing to reach a high application efficiency by modifying the irrigation time. The model predicted the infiltrated and drained volume very well.
