Abstract

PEDEMONTE, Ana  and  ALVAREZ, Jorge. Characteristics of Horticultural Family Farms that Influence the Management of Property Information. Agrociencia Uruguay [online]. 2013, vol.17, n.2, pp.160-169. ISSN 1510-0839.

The objective of this research was to identify the characteristics that affect the farm information management in horticultural family farms. The study involved family farms related to three groups located in Canelones, Uruguay. Systemic approach was used for the characterization of 101 horticultural farmers, based on a telephone survey carried out in the summer 2009/2010. Then the farmers were classified into three types according to their records and use of the information to start the analysis. It was determined that the factors motivating the use of the information were: the involvement of young family members in the production, higher levels of formal education of the owners and family, the multi-family nature, and the technical assistance. It was also highlighted that two out of three farmers had their own systems of records (field notes, computers). It was found that the main information considered for decision making included the economic results and the availability of family labor. In conclusion, knowledge of the motivating factors and the information used in making decisions opens a space for participative work with the farmers to improve their information systems.
