OLIVERA, Mauricio y URIARTE, Pilar. Transnationalism and Methodological Nationalism: Analysis of Media Discourses on Human Mobility in Uruguay (2018). Infor [online]. 2024, vol.29, n.2, e208. Epub 01-Dic-2024. ISSN 2301-1378. https://doi.org/10.35643/info.29.2.8.
This article aims to analyze media discourses on human mobility in Uruguay during the year 2018, seeking to understand the representation of immigrants, migration policy, and diversity within the context of Uruguay's emerging economy, framed within a transnational social space. The theoretical framework encompasses the concepts of transnationalism and methodological nationalism. The quantitative methodology involved constructing a database with 160 pieces, while the qualitative approach focused on content analysis of a corpus consisting of 9 editorial/opinion pieces from three newspapers and two leading weekly magazines in the country. From the perspective of critical discourse analysis shows media’s interpretative deficiencies to explain the heterogeneity of human mobility. Additionally, these deficiencies are evident when addressing social reproduction strategies across social classes in the transnational space.
