Resumen

PLANAS, Javier. Libraries for scientific culture: the conceptual foundations of Paul Groussac and Federico Birabén. Infor [online]. 2023, vol.28, n.2, pp.374-389.  Epub 01-Dic-2023. ISSN 2301-1378.  https://doi.org/10.35643/info.28.2.8.

This article analyses and compares the library ideas produced by Paul Groussac and Federico Birabén between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. From the study of their main texts and the available critical bibliography, we try to interpret the responses that the authors gave to the growing bibliographic production of the time. It is shown that the conceptual and methodological differences between Groussac and Birabén in relation to the role of librarianship and bibliography responded to the social and cultural conditions within which they inscribed their works and tasks: the former, linked to the organisation of the collection of the Argentine National Library; the latter, linked to the search for institutional support to develop the model of documentary exchange promoted by the International Bibliographic Institute. Among other conclusions, it is emphasised that the foundations used by the authors to objectify the library ended up providing a certain level of theoretical sustainability to the object itself.
