Abstract

ALONSO VARELA, Lucía et al. Information skills in first grade secondary school students: A study in public schools in Montevideo. Infor [online]. 2022, vol.27, n.2, pp.180-195.  Epub Dec 01, 2022. ISSN 2301-1378.  https://doi.org/10.35643/info.27.2.9.

The main results of the research that the Alfainfo.uy group developed in Uruguay with the aim of recognizing information competencies in first-year students of secondary schools are presented. Through the field work carried out, it was proposed to describe their competencies in information (search strategies, selection, use, evaluation and communication of information) and to develop strategies related to information literacy, based on the information needs of the students. The methodology used combined the application of a self-administered form that they had to carry out in a group, direct observation of said activity, and conducting interviews with qualified informants. Among the results, several difficulties related to the students’ literacy process could be evidenced, which is consistent with the absence of its explicit treatment in the curriculum. Neither could an active or leading role of the libraries of the centers be detected in this regard.
