The open science movement presents a notorious impulse, the opening of the research cycle and the communication of results are having a marked role in the scientific community. One of the components of open science is open access, a consolidated initiative with more than twenty years of development and evolution. The objective of this work is to place open access as one of the antecedents and pillars of this new way of approaching science and scientific communication. From the management of the Institutional Repository of the University of the Republic, COLIBRI, the advances regarding the open access policy in the country and in the University of the Republic and the impact on the Institutional Repository COLIBRI are pointed out.
