The research addresses the issue of firearm wounds in the Montevideo State Health Services Administration. The article describes the object of study, explores the human topography of the injuries in-depth, and formulates some hypotheses regarding potential lethal violence. Based on the research background, the study provides information on a significantly larger population by including all the generations served in Montevideo.

It is important to highlight that firearm wounds are a highly relevant health and safety problem that has not received sufficient attention from the social sciences, as well as from public health and safety policies. The descriptive research employs quantitative analysis techniques on secondary data regarding admissions and consultations for firearm wounds in the Montevideo State Health Services Administration between 2020 and 2023.

The findings show that firearm wounds predominantly affect young men, with almost three individuals treated each day in Montevideo's state health services for this reason. Regarding the topography of the injuries, there is a high level of involvement of the lower limbs, and, less frequently, of the upper limbs, thorax, head (face, skull, or neck), and abdomen. A quarter of the individuals treated sustained fatal injuries from firearms.
