Abstract

DELGADO, Edward et al. Bi-institutional case series on the management of gallstone disease in pregnancy. Anfamed [online]. 2025, vol.12, n.2, e201.  Epub Dec 01, 2025. ISSN 2301-1254.  https://doi.org/10.25184/anfamed2025v12n2a2.

Pregnancy is a period prone to gallstone formation, giving rise to debate regarding therapeutic options for gallstone disease. The main goal was to analyze the available therapeutic toolbox and its effectiveness in 68 pregnant women (with 74 clinical events) diagnosed with gallstone disease at the Hospital de Clínicas “Dr. Manuel Quintela” and the Centro Hospitalario Pereira Rossell between 2018 and 2023. For this purpose, a case series was performed using data from electronic medical records. Exclusive medical treatment was implemented in 58% (43) of the total clinical events analyzed without associated complications; non-surgical interventional treatment was applied in 17.5% (13) of the clinical events (not free of subsequent complications). Finally, surgical treatment was performed in 20,2% (15) of the cases, of which some were deferred. It was concluded that exclusive medical treatment proved to be as safe and effective as other invasive modalities, even with recurrence of symptoms.
