In the current year 2019, the law which recognizes the professional status of archivists and regulates their activity in Uruguay was passed. This regulation develops a legal precept established in the National Archives System Law (2007). The new law has been the result of an initiative from the Uruguayan Association of Archivists. The author of this paperexplores its background, the parliamentary procedure and the analysis of the new legal provision, leaving some elements for future regulation. Finally, it highlights some lines of work for the effective application of the new legislation.
