Abstract

AGUERRE, María Luisa. Latin American populism. Rev. Fac. Der. [online]. 2017, n.42, pp.1-26. ISSN 0797-8316.  https://doi.org/10.22187/rfd201712.

This paper aims to construct a typology to identify the populist phenomenon in Latin America. This typology consists of five categories which would always be present and would allow us to analytically discern cases of populism as we have defined, from a variety of leaders with popular appeal which we find in all the ruling parties. Historically there would be two populist periods: the first, from the year 30 of the twentieth century to the middle of it, and a second stage from the 90´s decade onwards. The five categories developed are: authoritarianism; overconfidence in the charismatic leadership; appeal to people opposed to the anti-people; anti-liberalism and nationalism.

Keywords : Latin America populism; authoritarianism; charismatic leadership; anti-liberalism; people opposed to the anti-people; nationalism.
