PEREIRA SOARES, Wagner et al. Biopsychosocial aspects that impact the mental health of institutionalized elderly persons: an integrative review. Revista urug. enferm. (En línea) [online]. 2026, vol.21, n.1, e401.  Epub 01-Jun-2026. ISSN 2301-0371.  https://doi.org/10.33517/rue2026v21n1a1.

Objective

: To explore what the literature reports on the biopsychosocial aspects that impact the mental health of institutionalized older adults.

Methods:

An integrative literature review with a qualitative approach, conducted in November 2021, including publications from the last 5 years, using the following databases: Scientific Electronic Library, Google Scholar, and the Virtual Health Library. The PICo strategy (an acronym for P: population/patients; I: intervention; C: comparison/control; O: outcome) was used to formulate the research question, and the flowchart proposed by the PRISMA protocol (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) was applied to better systematize the article selection process.

Results:

A total of 55 articles were found, of which 04 were included in this study. It was observed that all results were published in Portuguese and developed in different countries, with a predominance of studies from 2020-2021. The thematic axis "biopsychosocial repercussions impacting the mental health of institutionalized older adults" was constructed based on scientific publications highlighting the relationship between institutionalization and moderate psychological disorders. Other factors compromising the mental health of older adults were also associated with biopsychosocial aspects.

Conclusion:

Although the studies in this review support an agreement regarding the biopsychosocial aspects that impact the mental health of institutionalized older adults, it is evident that the data obtained from the literature point to the relevance of both biological factors and psychological and social aspects, which together can influence the mental health of institutionalized older adults both positively and negatively.
