Adolescent suicide is a complex phenomenon with profound and lasting impacts on families, health services, and communities. Uruguay presents high suicide rates compared to the region, making this issue a public health priority. The objective of the research was to understand what happened to mothers and fathers over time after the suicide of their adolescent child when a farewell note was left. A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, constructivist, emergent, and flexible design was applied. The sample consisted of mothers and fathers from departments located south of the Río Negro (Uruguay) whose children died by suicide between 2012-2017 and left a farewell note. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews and analyzed using content analysis. Findings indicate that the farewell note did not provide explanations but rather opened new unanswered questions. Several years after the event, parents remain engaged in a process of meaning-making, narrative reconstruction of their child, and emotional elaboration of their grief. Parental bereavement was found to be prolonged and characterized by identity, bodily, and community impacts. Testimonies from third parties’ friends, neighbors, became a significant source for maintaining a sense of connection and rebuilding fragmented meanings. Based on the findings observed, the need to strengthen sensitive, continuous, and family-centered postvention strategies is emphasized, where health and interdisciplinary teams have an active role in long-term support.
