This article examines the university inclusion of incarcerated individuals at the Faculty of Nursing of the University in Uruguay as part of a process to democratize access to knowledge and promote social reintegration. It analyzes the impact of institutional agreements and protocols that have allowed this population to access degree programs, as well as the academic, social, and personal benefits derived from education in penitentiary centers. The study also offers a critical analysis of the educational policy implemented in the uruguayan penitentiary system, identifying progress and persistent challenges, especially regarding inequalities in conditions among different penitentiary units, the lack of resources, and the need for greater interinstitutional coordination. Finally, it presents recommendations to strengthen the sustainability and quality of inclusive education programs in prisons, emphasizing the importance of education as a human right and a key tool for social reintegration and social cohesion.
