PRIORE, José Luis. Research ethics committees: realities and needs. Revista urug. enferm. (En línea) [online]. 2025, vol.20, n.1, e508.  Epub June 01, 2025. ISSN 2301-0371.  https://doi.org/10.33517/rue2025v20n1a5.

Scientific research is a methodical and systematic process that seeks to acquire new knowledge about the natural and social world. But when the subjects of research are human beings, it must be carried out in accordance with certain ethical principles and research ethics committees must intervene to provide the necessary guarantees for the research.

For this to be carried out, it is necessary to have committees that function properly and comply with certain intrinsic elements in terms of their composition and operation, in accordance with international and national regulations. A 2019 publication in the Colombian Journal of Bioethics, an analysis was carried out on the work of research ethics committees and the difficulties they had in fulfilling their responsibilities.

Based on this work, this paper describes how the committees were developed, their characteristics and current difficulties in their operation. Finally, proposals for improvement and empowerment are presented, elements that must be considered to ensure research in accordance with ethical principles that protect the people who participate in it.
