Objective:

to describe the experiences of a PhD student in Nursing Sciences from the University of Guanajuato, Mexico during his research stay at the Graduate Nursing Program of the Federal University of Pelotas, Brazil.

Method:

experience report, about the participation of a student in the research stay of the doctoral nursing education, carried out between March and July 2023.

Results:

in accordance with the work plan approved by the two educational institutions, the training and learning experiences, the experience as a teacher in undergraduate, master's and doctoral subjects; the progress in the research activities contributing to the doctoral thesis and the participation in the research nucleus; the knowledge transfer actions at the Hospital School of the Federal University of Pelotas and the participation in various academic events are reported.

Final considerations

: to overcome the barriers that may arise from being in another country, being in a new university, in addition to personal aspects of adaptation to develop an international mobility, these should be addressed through the possibility of dialogue, listening and generation of trust through the integration of common perspectives and benefits, which allow living the experience and making the most of it by developing skills of interaction, communication, reflection, organization and action for the achievement of the expected accomplishment. The experience of international mobility should not be considered only as a personal experience, it is important that through it the pragmatic vision of fulfilling a requirement is transcended, reaching to motivate other people serving as a guide in this new path that for many is a great challenge and an illusion.
