Introduction:

the COVID-19 pandemic has changed health practices, leading to rethinking health care in the obstetric context.

Objective:

to report a nursing experience in the management of an obstetric center in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Method:

this is an experience report conducted in an obstetric center that is a reference for fifty-five municipalities in Ceará, Brazil.

Results:

changes in attendance flows, ambience and obstetric practices were carried out through strategic planning, management organization and collaborative work.

Final considerations:

the modifications in the models of health care for pregnant women and puerperal women, with the adoption of new practices are necessary actions to face the pandemic of COVID-19 in the obstetric area.
