Resumen

FORRISI, Florencia. Nursing and Sexual Diversity: An Approach from the Transcultural Theory of Madeleine Leininger. Revista urug. enferm. (En línea) [online]. 2022, vol.17, n.2, e507.  Epub 01-Dic-2022. ISSN 2301-0371.  https://doi.org/10.33517/rue2022v17n2a13.

Stigma and discrimination based on sexual orientation and characteristics, gender expression and identity are social determinants of health. Uruguay's Mental Health Law (N.° 19.529/2017) promotes respect for diversity and calls for non-discrimination when formulating diagnosis regarding sexual orientation and gender identity.

This work seeks to give visibility to the perspective of sexual diversity from the point of view of mental health nursing. It analyzes Madeleine Leininger's theory including sexual diversity, reinterpreting the Rising Sun model from a rainbow perspective to provide culturally competent care, which, according to the author, uses knowledge acquired about a specific culture, providing individualized care according to the needs of each person and family.

Leininger allows us to analyze the specificities of the LGBTIQ+ population whilst providing new interpretations to its central concepts. It collaborates to achieve diagnoses that do not pathologize the belonging of a person to the LGBTIQ+ population or other personal characteristics that cannot be modified through nursing intervention. This theory shows that interventions from the restructuring of cultural care can only be provided by culturally competent nurses in a society and health system that values diversity and recognizes the specific needs of the LGBTIQ+ population.

Palabras clave : Nursing Process; Cultural Diversity; LGBTQ+ People.
