This article explores the tension between the demand for producing knowledge that is relevant and applicable to the local context and the expectation to generate an increasing volume of research disseminated in international circuits. The analysis focuses on the academic production in the field of public policy, an area of knowledge centered on context, methodologically diverse, and with a pragmatic orientation, making it a relevant case to examine its coexistence with processes of decontextualization.

The research uses the Department of Political Science at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of the Republic, as the unit of analysis. Through a documentary analysis of academic curricula and publications made between 2011 and 2022, a trend toward publishing abroad, in English, in high-impact repositories, and with comparative approaches is identified. In the face of the tension between internationalization and attention to local issues, public policy experts seem to prioritize their insertion into global academic circuits, incentivized by evaluation systems such as the Total Dedication Regime and the National System of Researchers. However, a distinct identity persists, marked by the preeminence of case studies, qualitative and historical analyses, and a prominent focus on the Uruguayan context.
