FREIRE, Teresa. This Master’s thesis in University Teaching is located in the research area of educational technology, in articulation with university didactics, with special reference to practices of health sciences teaching professionals in the academic profession. Online teaching has been challenged in recent years due to the development of technological environments, platforms and tools that have led to a review of teacher training in relation to the ways of teaching and engaging with students. In this process, the use of information and communication technologies, especially digital ones, plays a fundamental role.

The general objective of this thesis was to collect and analyze evaluations from students and teachers in a higher education course taught online under emergency conditions. The course object of this study is called Hematology and Immunology, which is located in the sixth semester of the Doctor in Medicine degree at the Faculty of Medicine, University of the Republic, Uruguay, within the basic clinical and community cycle.

We used a mixed epistemological strategy, developing both qualitative and quantitative approaches to determine recurrences in the 2020 and 2021 editions of the Hematology and Immunology course. To collect the data, we used adapted course evaluation questionnaires, surveys and in-depth interviews. We collected and analyzed opinions from teachers and students to detect challenges and opportunities for teaching the online course in a context of high social sensitivity caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In general, students expressed their satisfaction with the organization and development of the course, valuing the teaching provision, the virtual classroom, and the self-assessment and evaluation activities. However, they pointed out that online teaching in emergency conditions is difficult, especially for those who do not have the necessary tools and time, and who need greater interaction between peers and with teachers. The challenges of this teaching modality that requires greater student autonomy and self-regulation were exposed. On the other hand, the opportunities of this type of teaching were also highlighted, such as time savings and the possibility of continuing with their education even in conditions of social confinement. The development of this thesis also made it possible to demonstrate the difficulty of teachers in adapting to this type of modality, particularly due to the lack of time and difficulty in interacting with students. In times of development of digital educational technologies, the need for training in digital skills is highlighted, not only for the teacher, but also for the students.
