Abstract

CARDOZO., Ismael. Tensions in the curriculum for a Lifeguard Technicature. InterCambios [online]. 2022, vol.9, n.1, pp.63-73.  Epub June 01, 2022. ISSN 2301-0118.  https://doi.org/10.29156/inter.9.1.8.

Thinking and making possible a university-based lifeguard training necessarily implies building an overall vision that, without losing sight of the historical perspective of the profession, adds academic contributions that manage to fit it into the university logic. The current situation of society and of the University of the Republic demand the ability to transcend disciplinary boundaries and consolidate flexible structures of knowledge production that do not clog the potential of knowledge.

Objective:

This paper aims to account for certain elements that emerge and stiffen the process of curricular construction of a possible Lifeguard Technicature at the Higher Institute of Physical Education of the University of the Republic. This tension materializes when certain contributions of consolidated fields of knowledge, such as coastal management and environmental education, become visible in the historical development of the profession.

Method:

For this purpose, we opted for the analysis of interviews with key informants, lifeguards who have carried out activities related to coastal management and environmental education in Montevideo, Canelones, Maldonado and Rocha. On the other hand we also focused on examining the document that constitutes the proposal for the Lifeward Technicature.

Conclusions:

From what has been explored in this work, it is clear that there are academic and professional historical reasons that merit considering the contributions of coastal management and environmental education in the elaboration of a possible curriculum for a Lifeguard Technicature.
