Abstract

COIMBRA., Ana  and  VERNAZZA., Elena. Degree of Statistics: first monitoring of the 1998 Plan. InterCambios [online]. 2020, vol.7, n.1, pp.66-86.  Epub June 01, 2020. ISSN 2301-0118.  https://doi.org/10.2916/inter.7.1.7.

The Degree of Statistics of the Universidad de la República of Uruguay is managed by Facultad de Ciencias Económicas y de Administración, responsible for its administration, Facultad de Ciencias and Facultad de Ingeniería.

Since its creation in 1998, this is the only degree program in the country that offers an opportunity for curricular studies in statistics.

Until 2014 the degree’s curricula were composed of a common core of 16 mandatory courses and a set of specific courses that defined three different graduate profiles: Administration, Economy, and Actuarial and Demographic.

Since 1998, there were 2047 students enrolled in one or more profiles: 982 in Administration, 1549 in Economic and 674 in Actuarial Demographic. However, as of March 2018, only 76 have graduated.

In this paper we study the curricular trajectories of the students of the Bachelor of Statistics (Plan 1998) since its creation to the present. We have created sociodemographic profiles of students and indicators that reflect their academic performance in the courses that compose the common core.

The construction of the indicators is based on a document created by the Grupo Sistema de Información de la Enseñanza of the Universidad de la República. In this work, indicators of educational process are calculated.

The data used comes from academic and socioeconomics records provided by the Sistema de Gestión de Bedelías and the Dirección General de Planeamiento of the Universidad de la República. We consider all students enrolled in the Statistical Degree in the period 1998 - 2014.

Keywords : academic performance; educational trajectories; process indicators; profiles of income.
