Abstract

NOBLE., Javier. Physical education: Traditions in formation and professional identity. Profession, semi-profession or trade?. InterCambios [online]. 2020, vol.7, n.1, pp.3-12.  Epub June 01, 2020. ISSN 2301-0118.  https://doi.org/10.2916/inter.7.1.2.

In this work I try to discuss the possibilities of shaping a framework of professional identity in the field of physical education, in contrast to trends or traditions in university training at the Instituto Superior de Educación Física (ISEF) of Universidad de la República (Udelar). It is a career in higher education with a long tradition in teacher training, although without institutional links with training centers for primary or secondary education, and at the same time recently installed in the university structure. Higher education in physical education seems to undergo a profound revision of its purposes and of the links between the production of knowledge and social intervention, which offers an interesting opportunity to discuss some characteristics of its professional practice in relation to the constitutive traditions of the field. To do this, a frame of reference is considered that makes it possible to problematize the professional identities and the semi-professions of the trades and occupations, based on specific categories of analysis, in contrast to objective aspects of the current reality of the discipline in Uruguay.

Keywords : physical education; traditions; higher education; professional identity.
