CARABELLI MARI., Patricia. Languages and bibliography: Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences syllabi survey. InterCambios [online]. 2019, vol.6, n.2, pp.58-69.  Epub 01-Dic-2019. ISSN 2301-0118.  https://doi.org/10.29156/inter.6.2.7.

The acquisition of foreign languages is fundamental to improve the access to different sources of knowledge, widen cultural background, and to produce innovation in the scientific-academic fields, among other things. Based on this, since 2016, the research group concerning Foreign Languages and Production of Knowledge from the Foreign Language Department (CELEX) has been investigating the way in which foreign languages are used at university from a mixed, quantitative and qualitative, approach.

In this article, the results obtained during a survey of all the graduate careers’ syllabi from the Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación from the Universidad de la República are presented. After analysing 196 programmes (1843 bibliographic entries), the roll of the foreign languages could be analysed in the different courses that are being taught. It was verified that, although many courses use texts that have been written in different languages, most of the programmes included bibliography in Spanish or translated into Spanish (82.95 %). It was also noted that from 1825 texts 635 referred to translated versions, however 579 of these references did not mention that the texts were translations. It was concluded that programmes should foster the reading of texts in their original languages to enhance an internationalization process based on the existence of plurilingualism and interculturalism in the academic field.
