CAMACHO, Roberto Gomes e FIAMENGUI, Ana Helena Rufo. BELIEF AND PREJUDICE: THE CASE OF PORÃ BORDER. Lingüística [online]. 2025, vol.41, e203. Epub 01-Dez-2025. ISSN 2079-312X. https://doi.org/10.5935/2079-312x.20250005.
According to Lópes Morales (2004), in a situation of bilingualism and multilingualism, beliefs and attitudes can result from specific processes of linguistic discrimination in relation to languages or varieties living together in the same speech community. This motivation led us to investigate the linguistic situation on the Porã border, involving, on the Brazilian side, the city of Ponta Porã and, on the Paraguayan side, the city of Pedro Juan Caballero. The belief test, applied according to the technique devised by Lambert et al. (1960) and developed by Barbosa (2009), was based on various statements about the border languages, collected through an ethnographic procedure, in relation to which the students had to express agreement or disagreement. The results point to a tendency to give prestige to Portuguese to the detriment of Paraguayan languages.
Spanish often received intermediate scores between the extremes of valorization and stigma attributed to Portuguese and Guarani, respectively. A viable procedure to alleviate this situation in teaching would be to adopt a culturally sensitive pedagogical approach (Erickson, 1987).
