NIETO, Cecilia Rojas. INTERLOCUTIVE APPENDICES IN THE EARLY ACQUISITION OF SPANISH. Lingüística [online]. 2025, vol.41, e202.  Epub 06-Jun-2025. ISSN 2079-312X.  https://doi.org/10.5935/2079-312x.20250003.

This paper offers an analysis of the interlocutionary appendices (eh/eh?, mh? yes?, no?, right?) that children attach to the right periphery of their utterances. The materials analyzed, 5 longitudinal and 10 cross-sectional samples of children between 23 and 39 months of age, are part of the database Etapas Tempranas en la Adquisición del Lenguaje (ETAL-UNAM, where the spontaneous interaction between children and caregivers in the family environment is collected. This analysis considers the emergence and development of these appendices, their inventory and frequency of use, their placement with anchor-utterances (directive, declarative, interrogative and their variants) and the nuances of meaning they imprint on these. The results of the analysis show that these appendices operate as tools of intersubjective coordination. Children perform several operations with them: they attract the interlocutor’s attention to their utterances, modulate their communicative intention and project the expectation of a verbal response or a specific action from the interlocutor. The use of these interlocutionary tools in this age segment provides evidence for the development of early pragmatic skills and gives the possibility of contrasting these results with a profile of engaged development.

Palavras-chave : Interaction; interlocutory appendices; pragmatic development; Spanish acquisition.
