This article advances in the study of the Uruguayan pedagogical-grammatical field at the end of the 19th century, in the context of the Varelian school reform. It analyses the school grammars that were proposed to be used in public schools. It was observed which ones were discarded, accepted, or officialized. The survey of the official pedagogical publications and the educational legislation allowed to identify 19 grammars evaluated by the Dirección General de Instrucción Pública (from now on DGIP). The analysis provides evidence to know the symbolic capital of the authors of the school grammars and the disputes within the school space, and ultimately the way in which they were positioned in the national pedagogical-grammatical field.
