Abstract

BARGALLO ESCRIVA, María. THE TREATISE ON LOGICAL AND GRAMMATICAL ANALYSIS BY FÉLIX ARRIAGADA: AN APPROACH TO THE HISTORY OF GRAMMAR AT CHILEAN SCHOOLS. Lingüística [online]. 2023, vol.39, n.1, pp.31-49.  Epub June 01, 2023. ISSN 2079-312X.  https://doi.org/10.5935/2079-312x.20230002.

The aim of this article is to study what we consider to be the first textbook published in Spanish America on logical and grammatical analysis and, in consequence, the work which started the textual series on the continent in a political and educational context where textbooks for the teaching of Spanish were needed. The study of both editions of the treatise by Félix Arriagada, published in Santiago de Chile in 1859 and 1871, shows the fundamental influences that the author received when applying this teaching methodology: the Análisis lógica y gramatical de la lengua española (1843) by Juan Calderón and the Gramática de la lengua castellana destinada al uso de los americanos (1847) by Andrés Bello, as well as works by other contemporary authors, which Arriagada adapts to produce a textbook to be used for purposes of analysis in the Spanish grammar school lessons.

Keywords : logical analysis; grammatical analysis; Spanish grammar; Chile.
