Abstract

IACOBUZIO, Sofía Victoria  and  SILVA, María Luisa. PSYCH-VERBS: A TAXONOMY FOR HETEROGENEOUS EVENTS. Lingüística [online]. 2022, vol.38, n.2, pp.11-26.  Epub Dec 01, 2022. ISSN 2079-312X.  https://doi.org/10.5935/2079-312x.20220012.

This note aims to consider the grammatical treatment that psychological verbs have received, providing an analytical reflection on some problems motivated by the different approaches. First, we will look into the definition of this class of verbs. Then we will briefly address the most relevant analyses, focusing on those that deal especially with their grammatical behaviour. Finally, we will develop a proposal that may shed light on certain problematic issues, the Cognitive Approach (Langacker 1999). The note considers the nature of the difficulties raised by the classification and we concluded that they do not come from the corpus, but from the choice of theoretical models that impose discrete limits to heterogeneous phenomena, such as, for example, those events expressed by "psychological verbs". In our opinion, choosing approaches that conceive linguistic phenomena as constituted by nuances - a characteristic that comes from the choices made by the conceptualizers-, allows us to propose explanatory schemes with a greater scope.

Keywords : psych verbs; undergoer; grammar; semantics; Cognitive Grammar.
