We consider, in this research, the conjunctive function of the pluperfect. Our data comes from historical journals of the Institute of Ceará: thirteen from the period of 1944 to 1956 and thirteen from 2000 to 2012. In accordance with functionalist assumptions (modality, markedness and unidirectional change), we show data decrease from one synchrony to another besides contextual narrowing: it survives as a stylistic variant, mainly in counterfact conditionals (protasis-apodosis order) and comparative-conditionals (apodosis-protasis order), affirmative clauses, taking into connective and stative verb (fora), without time reference, in papers and in the first synchrony (1944-1956).
