Abstract

SILVA, Carmem Luci da Costa. Signifying to establish oneself in the mother tongue: vestiges of child’s thinking in language. Lingüística [online]. 2019, vol.35, n.2, pp.59-73.  Epub Dec 01, 2019. ISSN 2079-312X.  https://doi.org/10.5935/2079-312x.20190017.

This study aims to answer the following question: how do recognition and understanding properties, involved in the relationship between language and discourse, act towards the integration between form and meaning in the act of language acquisition?

In order to answer the question, the unfolding of the notion of signification in Benveniste (1995, 1989) is discussed, to then analyze excerpts of facts related to the language acquisition process of a child. Intersubjective communication involves the significance of discourse, related to the act of understanding - essential in language acquisition for the child and the other to attribute meaning and reference to their discourses; and the significance of the sign, associated with the need that the child and their interlocutor recognize the forms instantiated in the discourse as belonging to the language or as potentialities of such. The excerpts show that, in dealing with recognition and understanding, children situate themselves as interpreters of language-discourse.

Keywords : acquisition; enunciation; signification.
