Abstract

ARANTES, Lúcia. Diagnosis in language clinic: listening and interpretation. Lingüística [online]. 2019, vol.35, n.2, pp.39-48.  Epub Dec 01, 2019. ISSN 2079-312X.  https://doi.org/10.5935/2079-312x.20190015.

This paper aims at discussing some theoretical-methodological aspects related to the way children’s speech data are approached in language diagnostic procedures by speech-language pathologists. It is assumed the deep discontinuity between living speech and speech registers: there is a marked difference between these two instances. The questions raised in this article are: i) what, from living speech, remains accessible to the researcher?, and ii) what remains from living speech in the clinician’s listening when he deals with recorded speech materials?

I discuss the relevance of recording and transcription of dialogues in the construction of language evaluation procedures. This work is of a theoretical nature. Segments of clinical sessions will be presented to illustrate the discussion. It is concluded that living speech remains alive in the listening of the clinician and affects diagnosis decisions -listening must be theoretically instituted to be considered clinical in a strict sense.

Keywords : language clinic; diagnosis in speech-therapy; listening and interpretation; pathological speech.
