TELLES, Stella. POSTVOCALIC NASAL CONSONANTS IN LATUNDÊ AND IN BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE. Lingüística [online]. 2019, vol.35, n.1, pp.167-177. Epub 01-Jun-2019. ISSN 2079-312X. https://doi.org/10.5935/2079-312x.20190009.
This paper addresses the behavior of postvocalic nasal consonants in the indigenous language Latundê and in Brazilian Portuguese, based on available studies. In both languages, nasal consonants in coda have no defined places of articulation. In Latundê, in stressed syllables, the nasal coda behaves differently depending on the oral or nasal status of preceding vowels. When the nasal consonant in coda follows a nasal vowel, it is realized as a nasal consonant, but when it follows an oral vowel, it is observed allophonic realizations that result from the environmental shielding of the oral vowel, in order to further the preservation of the nasal/oral vowel contrast which occurs in this language. On the other hand, in Brazilian Portuguese, the existence of a postvocalic nasal consonant, in a diphonemic structure, enables the contrastive nasality of vowels on the surface and confirms the underlying nasal consonant in coda position
