In this article, we intend to describe the variation of the fricative /s/ in syllabic coda in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and American Spanish (AS), establishing a comparison in the behavior of the two linguistic systems. For this purpose, we present data from Evanini (2007), Ruiz and Miyares (1984), Martinez (2011), Moreno de Alba (1994), Martín Butragueño (2014), Lipski (1983), and others to describe AS; and Callou et al. (2002), Brescancini (2002), Hora (2003) and Ribeiro (2006) to delineate BP. We analyze the /s/ in the final coda that is part of the lexeme, not dealing with cases where it is a nominal or verbal ending. In general terms, we notice a convergence of the behavior of /s/ in syllabic coda and, with the exception of the geminate variant, the other variants ((s, z, ʃ, ʒ; h; (() are common in all languages and dialects analyzed. It is interesting to note also that Martinez (2011) presents a slightly different description for AS, indicating two possibilities of realization as plosives (k, ʔ(, which are not present in Portuguese. We emphasize that this should be a future research point, in view of the novelty of these achievements and their scarce description even in AS varieties
