Resumen

SCHWINDT, Luiz Carlos  y  GOMES CHAVES, Raquel. CONVERGENCE OF PROCESSES IN /R/-DELETION IN PORTUGUESE AND SPANISH. Lingüística [online]. 2019, vol.35, n.1, pp.129-147.  Epub 01-Jun-2019. ISSN 2079-312X.  https://doi.org/10.5935/2079-312x.20190007.

In this paper, we discuss the variable deletion of rhotics in coda position, particularly word-finally, in Brazilian Portuguese and American Spanish. Our main goal is to problematize the Convergent Outputs hypothesis (Schwindt, 2015), according to which two processes compete for the emergence of a single output form undergoing R-final deletion: an earlier one, which dialogues with morphology, and a more superficial one, phonetic and socially motivated. From the literature on the process, we find that the hypothesis is true for both systems. Under compensatory effect articulating morphological information on verbal inflection and stress of the thematic vowel, at some level of analysis, verbs are more susceptible to R-deletion than non-verbs, which preserve root phonology. A more superficial process responsible for final coda weakening reaches both classes indiscriminately, and reveals social motivation
