Abstract

BATISTA, Ronaldo de Oliveira. History of linguistics and revolutionary rhetoric. Lingüística [online]. 2018, vol.34, n.2, pp.145-168. ISSN 2079-312X.  https://doi.org/10.5935/2079-312x.20180020.

It is intended to raise three questions: (i) the narrative nature of history as a record of events; (ii) the role of rhetoric in the selection and explanation of historical facts in Linguistics; (iii) the “revolutionary leader” role construction in the language studies and its Brazilian reception. For that, the Historiography of Linguistics will be the theoretical-methodological axis and will conduct proposed reflections, within Philosophy and Theory of History. A case study follows the theoretical reflections, emphasising the analysis of the elaboration of the historical image of Noam Chomsky as “revolutionary leader”, as symbolically represented in the worksAs ideias de Chomsky Chomsky's ideas and Revolução na linguística Revolution in Linguistics in his Brazilian translations. The discussion points to a critical evaluation of the types of historiography elaborated throughout the history of the science of language and its contribution to the reflection on history and its representations.

Keywords : Historiography of Linguistics; Rhetoric; Scientific Revolution; Noam Chomsky.
