Abstract

ORONO, Mariela. The political conscience through language: the comments of Carlos Martínez Vigil to neologismos y americanismos (1895) by Ricardo Palma. Lingüística [online]. 2018, vol.34, n.2, pp.33-49. ISSN 2079-312X.  https://doi.org/10.5935/2079-312x.20180015.

This paper studies the comments made by the Uruguayan Carlos Martinez Vigil to the book Neologismos y americanismos (1895) by the Peruvian Ricardo Palma in the “Revista Nacional de Literatura y Ciencias Sociales” of Uruguay on five articles published between April and August of 1896. The study illustrates two views on the validation criteria to neologisms, and shows two concurrent positions among Hispanoamerican intellectuals of the time regarding the linguistic independence of Spanish-speaking countries in relation to Spain. The analysis also shows the authority position that Hispanoamerican specialists of language studies were assuming.

Keywords : neologisms; Ricardo Palma; Carlos Martínez Vigil; nineteenth century; language ideologies.
