Starting from a brief reflection on the development of studies guided towards the description of languages, focus is given to the course of Dialectology in Brazil. Emphasis is given to the presentation of Geolinguistic studies which culminate with the presentation of the roads already pointed out by the Atlas Linguístico do Brasil. In the first part, a panorama of the Geolinguistics is demonstrated, indicating the publication of regional atlases that have been produced since 1963, publication date of the Atlas Prévio dos Falares Baianos (Rossi, 1963). In the next step information on the Atlas Linguístico do Brasil project: emphasizing its importance towards the description of the Brazilian Portuguese language, from North to South, from data collected in loco, and comments on the results already available from the first two published volumes of Atlas Linguístico do Brasil (Cardoso et al., 2014a,b). From these results, for the presentation of this article, phonetic, lexical and morphosyntax aspects are highlighted.
