Abstract

BOSQUE, Ignacio. ON VERBS OF MEMORY AND THE SEMANTIC INTERPRETATION OF THEIR ARGUMENTS. Lingüística [online]. 2017, vol.33, n.1, pp.9-32. ISSN 2079-312X.  https://doi.org/10.5935/2079-312x.20170002.

In this article, the main Spanish verbs denoting memory processes (acordar(se) recordar(se), olvidar(se), etc.) are characterized from both a lexicological and a grammatical point of view, paying particular attention to the properties they share with psychological predicates and verbs of propositional attitude. In the first part of the paper, the semantic patterns in which they can be gathered are introduced, their argument structures are described, and widely used predicates are distinguished from old and dialectal items. In the second part of the article I analyze the possible semantic interpretations of the argument expressing the content of what is remembered or forgotten. Sentential and nominal arguments are analyzed separately. Among the former, special attention is paid to infinitives and indirect questions; among the latter, a number of transversal semantic interpretations are pointed out and discussed. Their very existence goes against the option of specifying them individually in lexical entries.

Keywords : verbs of memory; psychological verbs; verbs of perception; verbs of propositional attitude; semantic classes of verbs.
