Abstract

RUMEU, Márcia Cristina de Brito. 'Tu' OR 'você', 'te' OR 'lhe'?: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE FUNCTIONS OF SUBJECT AND VERB COMPLEMENT IN THE 2ND PERSON. Lingüística [online]. 2015, vol.31, n.2, pp.83-109. ISSN 2079-312X.

In this paper, the strategies for using the 2nd person in speech (tu and você) are quantitatively compared with the strategies for use of the verb complement in the 2nd person (te, lhe, a você, para você, o/a, a ti, para ti). Through the study of produced writings by mineiros and cariocas during the period between 1850 and 1950, we studied both the production of tu and você, as well as the diversity of verb complement strategies in the 2nd person in acusative, dative and oblique cases. The results present the subsystems currently used in the Minas Gerias-Rio de Janeiro region: prevalence of the subject você in mineiro letters and the variation between the subject pronouns tu and você in carioca letters, cf. Lopes et al. (2011a). There was emphatic alternation between te ~ lhe in the dative context, as well as high production of te, used as a person prefix, cf. Castilho (2010), Machado Rocha (2011).

Keywords : tu/você alternation; te/lhe variation; pronominal system.
