Based on the analysis of a polemical Caruso’s cartoon about the tragic fire at Kiss nightclub in Santa Maria, RS, the aim of this article is to reflect on the status of the image in Discourse Analysis, the application of theoretical concepts - especially discursive sequence and (visual) statement - to the visual materiality and materiality of different ways of reading permitted by that textual object. Two antagonic readings were analyzed and observed according to the main elements found in the strip. The analysis argues that one interpretation is based on a fallacious operation
