Abstract

MARCOTULIO, Leonardo Lennertz. ON THE GENESIS OF VOSSA MERCÊ IN MEDIEVAL PORTUGUESE. Lingüística [online]. 2015, vol.31, n.1, pp.61-79. ISSN 2079-312X.

Based on the analysis of Medieval Portuguese texts from the 14th to the 16th centuries (Davies et al. 2006) and a formal syntactic approach (Roberts et al. 2003), the aim of this paper, which takes into consideration the possibilities and properties of the Medieval Portuguese grammar, is to demonstrate that the genesis of Vossa Mercê as a form of address presupposes an initial stage of grammaticalization in which Vossa Mercê loses the features of a possessive phrase and assumes pronominal features.

Keywords : grammaticalization; forms of address; possessive phrase; pronominal phrase; Medieval Portuguese.
