CANCINO CABELLO, Nataly. SERMÓN EN LENGUA DE CHILE (1621) BY LUIS DE VALDIVIA: SINGLE AND AUTONOMOUS ASSEMBLED TEXTS FOR THE MAPUCHE PEOPLE EVANGELIZATION. Lingüística [online]. 2015, vol.31, n.1, pp.39-60. ISSN 2079-312X.

Luis de Valdivia, a Jesuit from Granada, was the main encourager of the defensive war at the beginning of the 17th century in Chile. The aim of this political strategy was the spiritual conquest of the Mapuche people, who were in fight with the Hispanic troops. In 1621, the Compañía de Jesús sent Valdivia to Valladolid, where Sermón en lengua de Chile was printed. This work was designed for the indigenous people evangelization and it is a new version of the first nine sermons from Tercero catecismo (1585) by Third Council of Lima. In this study, we maintain that, aside from its fragmentary character, the speaker created a single and autonomous assembled texts, relying on diverse textual and linguistic resources (the coherence among the themes, the parts of the sermon book, the clausio, typography and text layout, and  inter-textual cohesion), all of which discursive behavior we will analyze in this paper.

Palavras-chave : Luis de Valdivia; sermon book; Mapuche people; Sermón en lengua de Chile; intertextuality.
