Abstract

MIRANDA, Ana Ruth Moresco. PHONOLOGY IN DATA ON EARLY WRITING PRODUCED BY BRAZILIAN CHILDREN. Lingüística [online]. 2014, vol.30, n.2, pp.45-80. ISSN 2079-312X.

In this paper, data on early writing are analyzed in order to promote discussions about relations among children’s spelling choices and their linguistic knowledge, mainly the phonological one. Emphasis is given to the phonology of palatal consonants, the sonorants, /ʎ/ and /ɲ/, and the fricatives, /ʃ/ and /ʒ/, which have been considered complex in studies of the Portuguese language. Arguments used to characterize these segments as complex ones, when they are compared with data on early writing, have shown that these children’s spelling, regarding sonorants, agrees with the idea of complex consonant and provides evidence to the discussions about the issue. Concerning fricatives, especially in terms of phonetic diphthongs, data on language acquisition have not provided any evidence of the complex constitution of consonants. However, they have revealed the effect of the appropriation of the alphabetic system in the production of diphthongs, a fact that may be interpreted as a clue to the representational change of the palatal fricatives

Keywords : language acquisition; phonology and written; palatal sonorants; phonetic diphthongs.
