The present article has the purpose of presenting an overview of studies of dialects in Brazil, considering that Geolinguistics in this country started getting off the ground only in the early 20th century, at which time the field of linguistic studies advanced in Europe and already presented stimulating results for followers interested in this area. Therefore, a brief overview of the background of dialect studies in Brazil together with its different phases in which it can be divided is presented. Also the paths that were pursued as well as the adopted methodology and the already attained results are depicted. Emphasis is given to the project 'Linguistic Atlas of Brazil. Presently it is in the final phase of establishment of the corpus and of preparing for the publication of the first volume of maps.
